By Claire

Whitney has a new album out today - I Look to You. Very exciting. Her unbelievably amazing voice on new songs including a collaboration with Alicia Keys. As a Genxer, I have etched in my memory "I Wanna Dance with Somebody", "How Will I Know" and "I Will Always Love you" among many other Whitney songs. Looking forward to seeing her on Oprah, September 14: http://www.oprah.com/article/oprahshow/20090831-tows-whitney-houston

Entourage's Scott Caan

Monday, August 31, 2009

By Claire

How awesome is Scott Caan as E's new competitive colleague. His portrayal of a Hollywood manager is ridiculously hilarious. That scene where he is chomping on his apple while yelling at E and then makes E throw it out -- too funny. Equally funny was the meeting with Bob Saget where he is trying to get Bob to sign and Bob throws him out of his own office. Saget was also great playing himself being a total nut. Fun times on Entourage.

Nine Inch Nails in Chicago at Aragon Ballroom

Sunday, August 30, 2009

By Bender

Just saw Nine Inch Nails at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago (my first NIN show). It's part of their "Wave Goodbye" tour. While I don't believe this is the last time that NIN will actually play live/tour, it was exciting to see them. Even though I didn't know most of the songs in the set list, it was great being part of the NIN experience!

Also, it's worth mentioning that NIN is no longer with a record label and releases its music independently. NIN has been offering fans new music online at many different price levels looking out for both the casual fan as well as the hardcore fan.

Melrose Place -- Partridge Family Connection

Sunday, August 30, 2009

By Claire

I have to say the new Melrose Place looks good and scandalous. Laura Leighton, playing Sydney, will be back causing lots of trouble as well as several other cast members from the original Melrose Place. Interesting new cast members include Ashlee Simpson-Wentz and Katie Cassidy, daughter of seventies teen idol and Partridge Family star David Cassidy. For all the Melrose fun, tune in to the CW starting September 8.

Foo Fighters News

Friday, August 28, 2009

By Claire

So Excited! Foo Fighters are coming out - on November 3- with a greatest hits' album which will include 2 new songs. Do you have a favorite Foo Fighters' song? It's a tough call but I think I have to go with 'My Hero' as a favorite. Project Runway Recap

Friday, August 28, 2009

By Claire

What did you think about Project Runway last night? It was very cool to see Rebecca Romijn in her pregnancy glow. I really liked that we saw a lot of the behind the scenes' interactions of the contestants -- we don't always get to see how much fun they have with each other and them bouncing ideas off of each other so that was especially cool.

What did you think of the judges' decision to keep someone who had 2 huge missteps 2 weeks in a row? The Models seemed really shocked (I caught the beginning of Models of the Runway) -- it was very interesting to see their reaction.

Defying Gravity

Friday, August 28, 2009

By Bender

Just watched part 1 of Defying Gravity's pilot episode. The show has been described as "Grey's Anatomy in Space". I'm sure I'll give it up after 2-3 episodes since it was so cheesy and ridiculous, but the fun may be in watching it as a comedy and making fun of it. Ron Livingston's acting is so dry and robotic that it's comical.

Inglourious Basterds

Thursday, August 27, 2009

By Bender

Well, very interesting movie. More of a linear storyline than past Tarantino films and less bloody than the Kill Bill movies (although there is still plenty of violence).

In general, I think the film works - I was definitely glued to my seat wondering in each scene where it would go next, constantly anticipating a twist or turn.

David Bowie's "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)" from his Let's Dance album made one scene really stand out. It was so good I thought it was a new track - maybe he re-recorded it?

The cast of Senfield will be featured on several episodes of this coming season's Curb Your Enthusiasm on HBO. Michael Jackson Alive?!

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

By Bender

TMZ is showing a brief video of someone emerging from a van marked "coroner" and speculations is that Michael Jackson is still alive! While checking out various MJ Death Hoax sites one person suggested that it was Michael's eldest child, Prince, arriving to view the body (which makes some sense folks). I'll be the first to stay there were/are some odd events taking place before, during and after the memorial service (he's not even buried yet!), but this does seem far fetched. Then again, ANYTHING is possible!

"Michael Jackson" video clip on TMZ.com

MJ Conspiracy and Hoax Sites:

http://mjkit.forumotion.net/forum.htm

http://www.michaeljacksonhoaxdeath.com/

http://michaeljacksonconspiracytheory.blogspot.com/

P.S. The following clip of MJ's memorial service has been floating around the net and YouTube. It shows a man, seemingly in disguise, in the second row of the service and compares the "disguise" to ones that MJ has worn in the past. Actually, this seems more believable than the coroner's van video clip only because the person does seem like he/she is wearing a costume.

'Thirtysomething' out on DVD

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

Eddie Vedder - 7th Inning Stretch Tonight!

Tuesday, August 25, 2009

By Claire

Eddie Vedder sang the 7th Inning Stretch tonight at the Cubs game. As usual, he rocked it. And he ended with "let's get 10" - perhaps I am reading too much into it but I was thinking both because the Cubs are currently losing 12 to 4 And because Pearl Jam reissued their album Ten this year. Such deep thoughts...

Will & Grace with a Twist...

By Claire

The executive producer and co-show runner of Will & Grace has another show in the works which appears to be in the same genre as Will & Grace. How awesome! Will & Grace is one of my all time favorite shows - I was just reminiscing about the episode where Karen & Jack climb about 50 flights of stairs -twice- on their way to Will's parents' anniversary dinner - only to bust in at the worst moment singing "Happy Anniversary...". Football Profiles on TV

Starting in September, a five-part documentary titled "Full Color Football: The History of the American Football League" will air on Showtime:

New Release Tuesday - Movies

Tuesday, August 11, 2009

By Bender

I Love You, Man and 17 Again come to DVD this week, but I'm most interested in The Class (Entre Les Murs) which I didn't get to see in the theatre.

New Release Tuesday - Music

Tuesday, August 11, 2009

By Bender

I'm sure that there is good music being released somewhere, but I am disappointed (yet again) with this week's offerings...

If there are any Cobra Starship or Thrice fans then it's a good week for you...

Aliens, Conspiracies, & Higher Planes of Consciousness (Oh My!)

Monday, August 10, 2009

By Bender

I love a good conspiracy theory - if it involves aliens even better! One story floating around the net in UFO circles was called "Project Serpo". In a nutshell, it claimed that the U.S. was part of a human/alien exchange program where the U.S. sent 10 individuals to an alien home world to observe and learn about their culture. It was an interesting read - would make for a great movie!

One site, DisclosureProject.org, has testimony from many sources about an alien coverup within the government and calls for the disclosure of UFO activity and related knowledge to the general public. Assuming it's true I am all for disclosure - it's time for the world to move into the next level of human existence.

So, until THAT happens I am very interested in learning more about consciousness in general - what is consciousness? Am I my mind, my thoughts, my brain? How do we attain higher levels of consciousness?

The Business Idea REVEALED

Monday, August 10, 2009

By Bender

After thinking about numerous business ideas (including running an independent car company, starting an art gallery, developing a line of cartoon characters, and more!) I decided on skin care. Yes, that's right personal care and grooming products for men and women!

Once I locked down the idea I pursued it 110% by connecting with a business coach (Barry Moltz as mentioned in an earlier post) and began work on a business plan, market/product research, etc.

Future posts will discuss the business plan/research process in more detail (with some "do's" and "don'ts" to consider).

Viva La "V"

Remember the mini-series, "V", about an alien invasion of Earth? I was freaked out when I watched it as a kid. Now the re-imagined version is back this fall on ABC...

Joan Rivers Comedy Central Roast

Monday, August 10, 2009

By Bender

Check out the Joan Rivers Roast on Comedy Central. It's crude, lewd and rude, but funny as hell! Carl Reiner was one of the comedian guests and he was great. Melissa Rivers was in the audience and she got roasted too - how could she not? Later on in the show she had a chance to roast her mom (and the other comedians as well). Kathy Griffin hosted the show and the other roasters included Brad Garrett, Tom Arnold, Robin Quivers, Gilbert Gottfried and the standard group of has-beens and unknowns that the roast attracts.

A shout out to Gilbert Gottfried (whom I normally dislike) as he was very, very funny...

Paula Abdul's Options

Jeremy Piven on Big Brother

Monday, August 10, 2009

By Claire

Jeremy Piven made an appearance on last night's episode of Big Brother, promoting his new movie The Goods. He introduced the trailer to the houseguests and announced a competition for the chance to watch a screening of the movie in the house. They were shocked to see him. It was fun to watch him hang out with the houseguests on the show- he is extraordinarily sharp and witty and seems like he could pretty much hang out with anyone.

Only Kathy Griffin...

Sunday, August 09, 2009

By Claire

Kathy Griffin gave new meaning to the Teen Choice Awards as Griffin, 48, chose a teen to walk down the red carpet with her at the event. None other than Levi Johnston, 19, accompanied Griffin hand in hand. Check out the full story here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32352612/ns/entertainment-access_hollywood/

Gen Xers and Beyond...

Sunday, August 09, 2009

By Claire

So this week's US Weekly has an interview with 20 year old Vanessa Hudgens about her new movie Bandslam, which took place well before Thursday's sad news about John Hughes. At one point she is asked "You play a rocker in the movie, yet your hair is so perfect". Her response "If I had it my way, I would have done the Ally Sheedy in The Breakfast Club, just craziness all over the place". John Hughes' influence goes well beyond gen xers and the timing of these references is quite poignant.

Not to sound too wacky...

Friday, August 07, 2009

By Claire

but I came home yesterday after hearing the sad news about John Hughes, as Bender mentioned below, and had something very interesting greet me. In the mail, was the new People magazine with one of the pictures on the cover page being Molly Ringwald about the recent birth of her new twins. Thought it was kind of fascinating...John Hughes pretty much made Molly Ringwald a star and there she was.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Friday, August 07, 2009

By Bender

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a great, great show. I highly recommend it!

Current fans know that the last season ended with the musical "The Nightman Cometh". I've watched is over and over again and I laugh each time. I think it's one of the funniest segments ever.

"The Nightman Cometh" is going to be staged in a few cities around the country. Not to be missed!! Read about it on USA Today's PopCandy Blog...

AL Rookie of the Month

Wednesday, August 05, 2009

By Claire

Gordon Beckham, third baseman for the Chicago White Sox, was voted American League Rookie of the Month for July. It is well deserved - he has been consistently incredible offensively- hitting in he clutch, reaching base and getting runs in.

Though he is not a rookie, and was a special part of the 2005 White Sox world series win, a special shout out should go to Scott Podsednik who also has been particularly amazing offensively consistently throughout this season, including his walk-off hit to win the game for the Sox last night.

Paula Abdul Leaving American Idol

Wednesday, August 05, 2009

By Claire

Wow, the "Straight up" singer (had to give a shout out to that awesome 80s tune) will no longer be a part of American Idol. Very interesting. The chemistry of the judges and contestants is going to be so different. Do you think this will affect the amount of people watching the show?

Jeremy Piven on Conan

Wednesday, August 05, 2009

By Claire

Jeremy Piven appeared on Conan last night to show a clip of his movie: The Goods. Live Hard. Sell Hard. I actually thought he told some pretty funny stories and made some funny off the cuff comments - but the audience was tough. Cool that he always mentions his Chicago upbringing and memories of growing up there.

New Release Tuesdays - Music

Tuesday, August 04, 2009

By Bender

Once again I'm not really blown away by this week's new music releases (from a Gen X perspective).

However, I did see some Oasis re-issues on vinyl as well as a live release from The Hooters (of "And We Danced" fame).

New Release Tuesdays - Movies

Tuesday, August 04, 2009

By Bender

Flight of the Conchords: The Complete Second Season is out today on DVD. Season One was great - haven't seen season two yet but I will check it out.

The Love Boat: Season Two, Vol. 2 is out today on DVD. Now this is a great Gen X flashback!

GG on Entourage and a whole lot more

Tuesday, August 04, 2009

By Claire

What a great episode of Entourage this week. First of all, a Gossip Girl reference: "I look like Chuck Bass" said Turtle as he was trying on clothes, making a reference to teen billionaire Chuck Bass on Gossip Girl.

David Schwimmer made a great appearance as himself, he was very comical, and they made mention of his Chicago / Northwestern connection. His taking a liking to a tough, attractive Hollywood agent played by Autumn Reeser from the OC was fun to watch.

Vince on Facebook was hilarious - his outlook on life is always so refreshing.

Drama - what else can you say - he lived up to his nickname this week!

Let's Make a Deal is Back!

Monday, August 03, 2009

By Claire

It looks like classic game show Let's Make a Deal will be coming to day time. I so remember watching just for the costumes and for the wacky "prizes" that would be behind some of the doors. Other classics The Dating Game and $100,000 Pyramid may also be coming back as well. Check out the full scoop here: http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118006810.html?categoryid=14&cs=1

If I Knew Then What I Know Now

I would have brought suntan lotion to an outdoor carnival this weekend (which for some silly reason I thought would be indoors) and therefore would not be all sun burnt right now.

Hitting for the Cycle

Monday, August 03, 2009

By Claire

I think it is the coolest thing when a baseball player hits for the cycle: hits a single, double, triple and a home run in the same game. Yesterday, Melky Cabrera hit for the cycle in the Yankees win against the White Sox. It was the first time a Yankees player had hit for the cycle in 14 years. And the last time a Yankees player did it on the road was Joe DiMaggio back in 1948, also in Chicago. Lots of historic White Sox games lately.

Survivor News

Rob & Amber, who got engaged at the Survivor All-Stars Finale in 2004, have a new baby girl. Doesn't it seem like it was just last year when Amber wore that I heart Rob shirt and Rob proposed on Live TV?
