Shutter Island No. 1 Again!

Sunday, February 28, 2010

By Claire

In its second week in release, Shutter Island came in at no. 1 again with over $22 million. In just 10 days in release, it has taken in over $75 million domestically.

Kevin Smith's new release Cop Out, starring Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan, Sean William Scott, Adam Brody, and Jason Lee did very well coming in at no. 2 with over $18 million. New release The Crazies, starring one of my favorite actors Tim Olyphant, came in at no. 3 with over $16 million. Check out all of the movies this weekend here.

Olympics -- Canada Wins in OT! Gets Gold!

Sunday, February 28, 2010

By Claire

What an unbelievable hockey game. With 24 seconds left in regulation, Team USA tied the game up 2-2. In sudden death overtime, Canada scored first - winning the gold medal. Ryan Miller, the goalie for Team USA, was visibly majorly bummed - however he did such an amazing job throughout the Olympics. Team USA ended up with the silver medal which is quite an accomplishment.

From Paris with Love (aka Return to Sender)

Thursday, February 25, 2010

By Bender

Just saw From Paris With Love and let's just say that John Travolta should hang up his "bad guy suit" forever! The movie couldn't decide whether to be a comedy, a buddy film, a thriller, or an action movie so they tried all of them at once. You could have easily placed Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan into these roles and it would have made more sense. While I like John Travolta (and Jonathan Rhys Meyers) things just did not click here. A few action/chase scenes and a small twist were cool, but not enough to save this movie.

Jason Segel, one of my favorite How I Met Your Mother actors, (and of Forgetting Sarah Marshall and I Love You, Man fame) will be starring in a movie with Cameron Diaz called Bad Teacher. He will be playing a gym teacher and I am sure hilarity will ensue as it always does with him.

John Hughes Tribute

Sunday, February 21, 2010

By Claire

Speaking of the Oscars, there will be a special tribute to filmmaker John Hughes (who passed away suddenly at age 59 last August) at this year's Oscars. Pretty cool. Coincidentally both co-hosts appeared in Hughes movies: Steve Martin in the classic Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and Alec Baldwin in She's Having a Baby.

By Claire

We are the World 25 for Haiti

Saturday, February 20, 2010

By Claire

The We are the World remake song/video debuted on the opening night of the Olympics, and though it has received mixed reviews, it was quite remarkable to watch only 11 days after it was recorded. This week it reached number 2 on the hot 100 chart bested only by Ke$ha's Tik Tok which has been at number 1 for nine weeks. Check it out.

Lost - The Final Season

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

By Bender

So I finally caught up on Lost. I'm glad that it's the final season. I love the show, but it's time to wrap things up and move on. While the characters and the story still intrigues me I have a feeling that I'm going to be disappointed at the conclusion of the series. The new episodes are good, but at the same time they are so far out there that it's practically comical. What the heck is going on!?!?

Avatar Not No.1 - Streak Stops at 7!

Sunday, February 07, 2010

By Claire

Dear John, the Lasse Halstrom directed movie starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried, came in at no. 1 over the weekend with over $32 million. Avatar still did very well at no. 2 taking in over $23 million. John Travolta's new movie, From Paris With Love, released this weekend did not do as well coming in at no. 3 with just over $8 million.

Super Bowl XLIV

Sunday, February 07, 2010

By Claire

What did you think of the game? Were you happy New Orleans pulled out the win in the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance? And then there are the commercials, of course. Any favorites? I thought the Betty White /Snickers one was particularly hilarious. I also thought the David Letterman, Oprah, Jay Leno commercial was quite funny.

"We Are the World 25 Years for Haiti"

Friday, February 05, 2010

By Claire

Check out these pictures from inside the studio as the musicians including Barbara Streisand and Jennifer Hudson and actors including Vince Vaughn and Jeff Bridges all gathered together on Monday to record the new version of We are the World. Lots of surprises there including Lionel Richies's granddaughter. I still can't believe the first one was 25 years ago. That is just too wild. Can't wait to hear this new one!

Tributosaurus Becomes Prince

Thursday, February 04, 2010

By Bender

The group Tributosaurus picks an artist every month to cover. Last night Tributosaurus "became" Prince. It was a fan.tas.tic. show!

The musicians, the band (with horns!) and singers were amazing (a few singers rotated throughout the night). They played hits and hardcore fan favorites. They got Prince's nuaces, inflections, and quirks all down to a science - very cool!

The set list included:

Sexy MF, When Doves Cry, Alphabet Street, Nothing Compares To U, Little Red Corvette, Housequake, Sign of the Times, Call My Name, Electric Chair, P Control, Lady Cab Driver, Head, Pop Life, Let's Go Crazy, Purple Rain, Sometimes it Snows in April, Starfish and Coffee, and 7

I would like to hear Prince play this exact set!!

Two and a Half Men

Wednesday, February 03, 2010

By Claire

How cringe worthy was Alan's date at the beginning of the new episode Monday night? It was hard to watch yet I couldn't look away. Fascinating that, Steven Eckholdt, the guy who played "Mark" in the Rachel/Ross debacle is back as another potential "Mark". Very interesting "to be continued"..Thoughts on what you think will happen?

How I Met Your Mother

Wednesday, February 03, 2010

By Claire

What did you think of the new episode Monday night? Sportscaster Jim Nance and current NY Yankee (and former Chicago White Sox Player) Nick Swisher guest starred. It was pretty cool to see them on the show. Barney's over the top behavior never ceases to amaze me and Lily is consistently funny as she always has the need to comes up with a wacky way to save the day.

The Grammy Awards

Monday, February 01, 2010

By Bender

In years past I would "tivo" the show and fast forward through everything except a few select performances or presenters. This year I found myself watching more of the performances themselves and skipping most of the awards presentations and speeches. I thought it was cool to see Elton John and Lady Gaga together, Pink's acrobatic's were cool, and Jamie Foxx was awesome with Slash. It was really about "the show" this year.

My one disappointment was the Michael Jackson tribute. The 3-D film fell flat (although it was a cool idea) and the performers singing Earth Song, while all good in their own right, didn't gel into a "MJ" experience. It was nice/sad, however, to see (and hear) MJ's kids, Prince and Paris, accept an award for their dad.

The Book of Eli

Monday, February 01, 2010

By Bender

Just saw The Book of Eli and liked it a lot. I thought the story and the message were great and the way the film was shot (i.e. scenery, cinematography, etc.) was really cool. Great performance by Denzel Washington.
