Hot Tub Time Machine is Right On Time!

Monday, March 29, 2010

By Bender

Hot Tub Time Machine is Right On Time...for 1986! Very funny (and mindless) movie about a group of guys who travel back in time (yes, via a hot tub).

John Cusack makes a great 1986 John Cusack movie in 2010 - get that?

Anyone who is a fan of the 80's or John Cusack or the 80's and John Cusack will enjoy this movie!

John Oates at Space

Monday, March 22, 2010

By Bender

Just saw John Oates last night at a cool new venue in Chicago called Space. Space only holds about 200 people which makes the show very intimate. Oates played close to 3 hours - some solo work, some Hall & Oates songs, some blues, some bluegrass/country. John played with a trio (he was on acoustic guitar along with another acoustic guitar player and a drummer). The show was very loose and informal and had a "storytellers" vibe. John would tell stories before and after each song which was very cool.

Reflecting on the show (it's what we do here!) it's amazing to me that I saw Hall & Oates at the Allstate Arena (then the Rosemont Horizon) in 1984/1985 at one of two sold out shows ('Til Tuesday opened by the way). Over 20 years later I'm watching him perform 2 feet away from me - very exciting. What artist of today will I want to see in 20 years in that type of setting? Heck, what artist of today will be around in 20 years let alone be able to actually play and sing to an intimate crowd of 200?

Hall & Oates are set to tour together at the end of the month.

Hot Tub Time Machine

Saturday, March 20, 2010

This movie, in which a group of 4 guys wake up in the year 1986 after a night of drinking in a hot tub, sounds hilariously wild. John Cusack, Rob Corddry, and Craig Robinson star. It comes out this Friday. Are you going to see it? Read more about it here.

The Good Wife

Saturday, March 20, 2010

By Claire

is simply an awesome show. Just saw this week's episode. Such a great balance of a case with the personal twists. Chris Noth and Julianna Margulies are great and another favorite of mine is Josh Charles as Will. I was glad to see him with so much screen time this week. This is such a great role for him (I loved him in 1989's Threesome and Aaron Sorkin's Sportsnight among his many roles) and he really shines here.

Green Zone Movie

Monday, March 15, 2010

By Bender

Just saw Green Zone with Matt Damon. While the movie was shot and acted very well, I think, overall, it was very...OK. The story deals with a soldier's work in Iraq trying to find WMDs. Perhaps knowing the actual outcome of the search in Iraq the movie seemed anticlimactic.

Oscar Wrap-up In Brief

Monday, March 08, 2010

By Bender

Just a few comments about last night's Oscar Awards:

* Neil Patrick Harris' opening number: While I think he is talented and has a good stage presence/voice I thought his opening number was kinda "meh" - bring back Billy Crystal!

* Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin were very funny in their monologue and there were some funny lines throughout the show - not as over the top as I would have hoped, but funny nonetheless.

* Ben Stiller dressed in Avatar garb and speaking the Navi "language": 50% cringe-inducing and 50% funny.

* Overall look and feel of the show: The show didn't seem as "grand" as past Oscars. It had a living room/cabaret feel to the set and stage which the producers likely did on purpose to create an "intimate" feel, but it came across as a bit cheap looking and not "Oscar worthy".

* Sandra Bullock: Great speech - good for her!

Pilot based on Scott Turow Book!

Wednesday, March 03, 2010

By Claire

Scott Turow's thriller of a book, Pleading Guilty, is the basis for a new pilot on Fox. The show "centers on Mack (Isaacs), a cop-turned-attorney described as "a big handsome Irish hunk" who is assigned to investigate the disappearance of the firm's star litigator. " Another cool idea for a series. Did you read Pleading Guilty back in 1993? Or his first book, Presumed Innocent, back in 1987?

Blair Underwood Returning to TV!

Wednesday, March 03, 2010

By Claire

Blair Underwood, one of my all time favorite actors, has joined the NBC pilot, The Event. The show is described as, "a thriller chronicled from multiple points of view that centers on Sean (Jason Ritter), a regular man fighting his way through the mysterious circumstances of a conspiracy to assassinate the U.S. president (Underwood)." Sounds interesting.

I actually saw the premiere last night and I have to say it was pretty funny- albeit totally outrageous.

T-Bone Wolk Passes

Monday, March 01, 2010

By Bender

Daryl Hall and John Oates bassist, T-Bone Wolk, passed away this weekend. As a long time fan of Hall and Oates it is quite shocking. I have seen him perform with Hall and Oates countless times. The band probably should have been re-named Hall, Oates and Wolk based on his history with and contributions to the group. Condolences to the band as well as family and friends. Rest in Peace.
