Top Chef - Did He or Didn't He?

Friday, July 30, 2010

By Claire

If you watched Top Chef Wednesday night, the question remains: did Alex steal Ed's pea puree? The funny thing is I am sure the footage is there to answer that question but it was not shown. The pea puree is quite significant in the competition because Ed's went missing, Alex decided to make one at the last second and ended up winning the competition primarily because of the puree. Interestingly, Ed was also in the top three and most likely would have won if his puree had ended up on the plate like it was supposed to. Is there a Top Chef scandal?

Scott Podsednik

Thursday, July 29, 2010

By Claire

Here's a question: why has Scott Podsednik gotten traded so much in his major league baseball career? He is an all around great player. He hits, steals bases, great outfielder. He was a vital part of the 2005 Chicago White Sox World Series Championship team. It is fascinating that such an all around fantastic player gets traded so much -- he just got traded again yesterday from the Kansas City Royals to the LA Dodgers. Thoughts?

DIVE!

Thursday, July 29, 2010

By Claire

Have you heard about this movie? DIVE! is a film made about the food wasted in America and the amount of good food that can be gotten from dumpster diving. NPR did a very interesting story about this movie and, Jeremy Seifert, the guy behind it.

Inception

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

By Bender

Saw Inception and thought it was great. Of course there are some holes in the plot and some of the dialogue had me thinking, "really"? However, it's a very cool concept and great visual effects. Worth a second viewing and I don't often see movies twice.

Bittersweet news. Damages has been picked up for two more seasons, but it will not air on FX and instead air on DirecTV. Total bummer (unless you have DirectTV).

Sting at Ravinia

Monday, July 19, 2010

By Claire

Saw Sting's Symphonicity concert last night and it was awesome. He did a story tellers type thing giving a little intro and background to the songs he wrote. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was incredible - the arrangements of his songs ridiculously cool. And there were lots of great harmonies. His voice is still absolutely amazing. He played some classics including Straight to My Heart, Fields of Gold, Englishman in New York, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, Roxanne, and Moon Over Bourbon Street.

Predators, a new release, came in at no. 3 with over $25 million. In its 4th week out, Toy Story 3, took in over $22 million.

Prince 20ten

Sunday, July 11, 2010

By Bender

Prince has released a new CD, entitled 20ten, through newspapers only. The first releases will be in Europe (a U.S. release date is still being negotiated). From the snippets I've heard I have to say the songs are some of the freshest Prince tracks in years.

Prince recently declared the internet as "dead" - I think it's part shock value, part PR move, and partly true (in his mind anyway). Typically Prince has embraced technology and the internet. His websites have always been creative and ahead of the curve (even when they were flash heavy and difficult to navigate at times) and he even won a Webby Award a few years back. Here's hoping he goes back online and reinvents his web presence.

Stay tuned...

Despicable Me

Sunday, July 11, 2010

By Bender

Just saw Despicable Me and I really liked it a lot. It had jokes and references aimed toward the adult crowd and not too scary for the younger crowd (although it did have its share of guns and explosions). I thought it was very funny and original.

Grease Sing Along

Saturday, July 10, 2010

By Claire

How cool is this? There is now a sing along version of the 1978 movie Grease with "projected lyrics and playful animations". If you grew up (as I did) watching the movie over and over again wanting to be a part of it, now is your chance.

By Claire

LeBron James will be announcing tomorrow night Live on ESPN - at 9ET/8CT - his future team in the NBA. Since there has been so much excitement surrounding the announcement, it was decided to make an hour long show out of it with the funds raised to go to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Pretty cool thing to do from all of the press.

World's Best Barista

Monday, July 05, 2010

By Claire

How cool is this? A Chicagoan, Michael Phillips, has won the title of world champion coffee barista after competing in the 11th annual world barista championship in London. His coffee making finale, in front of an international panel of judges, was set to music including some ABBA songs. To love your job and become world champion at it is pretty sweet.

Wimbledon History

Monday, July 05, 2010

By Claire

Yesterday, Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe were together on NBC watching the 30th anniversary of their epic Wimbledon tie beaker match. Very cool to hear their commentary and thought process about the match. I totally remember back in 1980 when it happened. Do you have any memories of that history making set?

Kobayashi, Chestnut and Hot Dogs

Monday, July 05, 2010

By Claire

At this year's 4th of July Coney Island hot dog eating contest, there was a bit of excitement. Joey Chestnut won for the 4th year in a row, however, one of his usual competitors - Kobayashi -- sat out the competition because he did not sign a contract with Major League Eating. He was there and ended up crashing the stage, wrestling with police, and getting arrested. Pretty wild stuff. For more about the contest and the incident, click here.

Travie McCoy -- Billionaire

Thursday, July 01, 2010

By Claire

Do you know Travie McCoy's new song, Billionaire, featuring Bruno Mars? As a Gen Xer, I am not sure if I should admit this or not but I happen to be quite entertained by it! Great harmonies and very catchy tune. The repeat of his performance of the song on Jay Leno is airing tonight if you want to check it out.

New Spiderman!

By Claire

Andrew Garfield has been picked to play Peter Parker in the next Spiderman movie. If you are not familiar with him, you are not alone. Who did you want to get the role?

Fun fact: the next film will be made in 3D. Should be cool.
