Sports Sunday / SAG Awards

Saturday, January 29, 2011

By Claire

For those you who are both Hockey and Football fans, big day for you tomorrow. The NHL All Star game is on in the afternoon and the NFL Probowl is on at night.

If sports are not your thing, the SAG (Screen Actors Guild Awards) are on tomorrow night, with live red carpet shows before hand. Guilty pleasure I must admit.

The King's Speech

Saturday, January 29, 2011

By Claire

Just saw the fascinating movie, The King's Speech. Great acting by Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Guy Pearce and Helena Bonham Carter. Set in historical times in the 1930s this movie has it all: friendship, royalty, privilege, social status, war time, family drama, and personal struggles. Very well directed- I totally understand why it is getting so much praise during this awards season. So different from The Social Network which won best picture at the Golden Globes. With both lead contenders for the Oscar, it will be interesting to see what happens.

Little Fockers

Tuesday, January 11, 2011

By Bender

Just saw Little Fockers and it was funny in parts - not great, but a some laughs. Owen Wilson plays the kooky fool and still cracks me up. Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand are also funny playing Ben Stiller's parents. Mindless fun.

Joan Rivers: Piece of Work

Saturday, January 08, 2011

By Claire

Just saw this documentary and it is a fascinating portrayal of Rivers in her current world and how she got to where she is. I recently came across the word sybarite (lover of luxury) and that word clearly describes her. Wow does she live well and as she says, she clearly likes her "creature comforts". That said, you can say what you want about her humor, but she is definitely very intelligent and pushes the envelope like nobody's business. She also is extremely tenacious as she is able to keep going and working hard even after some very rough times. Together with this, she is sensitive about things that you wouldn't necessarily expect.

True Grit and The Tourist

Friday, January 07, 2011

By Bender

Just saw True Grit and The Tourist. True Grit was one of the best movies of 2010 with Jeff Bridges playing a tough guy in the wild west - perfect casting. The Tourist was amazingly bad and it's a shame because both Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie were in the leads. Not that they're incapable of a bad movie, but Johnny Depp is usually so strong in even the worst roles.

See True Grit for the drama and for Jeff Bridges. If you must see/watch The Tourist do so as if you're watching a comedy, albeit it a comedy of errors.

The Hangge Uppe

Sunday, January 02, 2011

By Claire

There is nothing like some fun eighties music for a great night out on the town. Went to a bar called The Hangge Uppe in Chicago this weekend. Totally cool, chill bar, casual feel, and great tune after great tune. Even people who don't like to dance couldn't help but smile at all of the great music and got their groove on.
